Subject: 5.0 Tech Memo DTS DSP Version 1.5
TECHNICAL MEMO
This memo addresses information regarding the new Citation 5.0 DTS Digital Signal Processing
(DSP) board and new operating software Version 1.5.
These changes provide many improvements in both the performance and operation of the Citation 5.0
A/V Preamplifier Controller. In addition, we have provided other technical notes to assist in your set up
and use of the unit.
The Citation 5.0/DTS and new software V1.5 offer both performance and feature improvements when
compared to the 5.0 AC-3 only version. The new DSP board used in the DTS version is a later
generation platform that replaces the original DSP circuits. In addition to DTS, this new board offers
improvements in digital audio quality and overall operational performance. Due to the modular design
of the 5.0, any 5.0 in the field may be upgraded to DTS by replacing the DSP board and upgrading the
operating software to Version 1.5.
The new operating software is also compatible with previous versions of the 5.0 using the older DSP
board. The new software alone will upgrade any non-DTS unit resulting in both improved operating
performance and some audio enhancements. Due to the low cost of upgrading the Citation 5.0 to DTS,
we recommend upgrading to the new DTS platform and operating software even for those customers
where DTS processing is not required.
A. Improvements with New DTS DSP Board
1.Improved Circuit Stability - The new DSP platform and board design improves the stability of the digital
circuits. This improvement will result in a reduction of audio dropouts particularly when AC line conditions
fluctuate due to the power cycling of other electrical devices.
2.Digital Audio Muting - The older DSP board may allow digital noise from some DVD players to pass from
the DSP board through the audio outputs. This "digital noise" is heard when a DVD is in FF, Pause, Play,
or Skip functions. The new digital board mutes and un-mutes faster virtually eliminating audible digital
noise when operating transport functions on DVD players.
3.Sounds Better - Listening tests indicate that the new board sounds smoother, less bright and more
balanced in frequency response. The improvements affect all 5.1 and PCM digital sources. Try it and we
believe you will agree.
B. Improvements in New V1.5 Software
1.Improved IR Response - Response from IR commands has greatly improved in V1.5 compared to all
previous software versions. Please note that the 5.0 will not respond to IR commands for mode or source
switching when the "volume level" message is displayed on screen. It is also normal that source switching
between analog sources is faster than switching to and among digital sources or programs. If you do
experience inconsistent IR control using the Citation remote, change the AAA batteries as battery wear
does impair IR responsiveness.
2.Video Detect - A line item has been added in the "Program Setup" menu so that the Video Detect circuit
may be turned "Off" from its normal "Auto" condition. Some video sources, including VCR?s, have a low
"sync" output that is below broadcast standards. If the Citation 5.0 detects out of spec sync levels, the unit
may turn off the video signal passing through the video board and display a blue screen. If you have a
video source that intermittently flashes to the blue display, turn "Off" the "Video Detect" feature. This
feature should only be used for problematic video sources.
3.Digital Audio Detect - The 5.0 will automatically detect PCM, Dolby Digital and DTS (where applicable)
bitstreams and switch to the appropriate digital surround mode. V1.5 includes the ability to easily override
the Auto Detect circuit by pressing the Dolby button on the remote. (NOTE - In addition to turning off this
circuit by pressing the Dolby button, Auto Detect may also be shut off in the "Program" menu for each
source. This circuit should normally be left "ON" under normal operating conditions.)
